Multidrug Resistant Bacteria in Iraq and Hospitals
Antibiotics have saved many lives. However, their widespread use has promoted the survival and spread of a growing variety of antibiotic resistant bacteria, resulting in nosocomial infection nightmares like MRSA, VRE, and ESBL. Of growing concern is a multidrug resistant bacteria known as Acinetobacter baumannii (MDRAB), which causes infections like pneumonia and bacteremia in persons who are ill, wounded, or immunocompromised. Although MDRAB existed in Europe before the onset of the Iraq War, its numbers have been on the rise since a military outbreak in 2003.

The Victims remain silent. Congress as well as Veteran Affairs is not under any special pressure to deal with MDR Acinetobacter Baumannii as there is no public outcry to deal with it. People who survive the infection go on with there lives with no fanfare and reason to speak up. Even TV reporter Kimberly Dozier had a bad run in with the infection after recovering from a close call but doesn’t seem to want to talk much about the infection itself.

BAGHDAD - Fifty-one American troops in Iraq have been diagnosed with and treated for swine flu, while another 71 soldiers remain in isolation suspected of contracting the potentially deadly virus, the U.S. military said Sunday.
The figures were released as Iraqi health officials confirmed Sunday the country’s first swine flu death.
A woman in the southern holy Shiite city of Najaf died of the disease, raising fears about a possible outbreak among worshippers making pilgrimages to the revered sites.
